Destination Weddings on the Rise

destination wedding in muskokas

Despite the recession, destination weddings are on the rise, says a recent National Post article. Why?

I was recently asked this question by a journalist for an article on destination weddings.

It’s pretty obvious that the biggest reason weddings away are taking off is the budget factor. Generally speaking, destination weddings cost less because there are less  guests. (The average amount of guests at a destination wedding is 48.) Less guests = less money. Plus, couples usually combine their wedding with their honeymoon which saves money.

Another reason for the increase is that the options for destination weddings have exploded in recent years . Many venues offer complete package deals that make life easy for couples who don’t want to invest the time in planning a wedding from scratch.

Also, couples love the idea of treating their guests to a good time. What better way than a destination wedding? Weddings away are big on fun and they allow couples to spend quality time with friends and family members in a shared experience that’s remembered for a lifetime.

Underwater Wedding Photos?

zena-holloway

zena-holloway

My current obsession is photography. I just recently fell in love with my Nikon D70 (dinosaur, I know.) I’ve had it for more than four years, but never really understood the technical aspects of my camera. I finally decided it’s time to learn and my photos are improving immensely!

I’m so inspired by the work of other photographers. And one of them is Zena Holloway. Her work is so dreamy! Interestingly, Zena started out as a scuba diver before she made a career out of underwater photography. I am so captivated by these ethereal underwater scenes . Wouldn’t it be incredible to do a wedding shoot like this?

Why did you have an intimate wedding?

First of all, neither of us had ever wanted a large wedding.  We knew that before we got engaged. Practically, we were completely against the idea that our wedding would put us into debt. We wanted to start our lives together in good financial shape, not with a new debt to bring into the marriage.  But, as it happened, there was a critically important emotional reason: this was also an intense and sad time for my immediate family.  My father was terminally ill with cancer.  He was weak and in pain.  We wanted him to be able to participate in the whole day, if he could, and knew that a large crush of people would make that hard for him.  It was already an intimate time for our loved ones; it was a time of closeness and a profound time for our family. We felt that the circle of people we shared this day with needed to be the people we were absolutely closest to.  It was so important to us that our immediate families and closest friends be able to share in the joy of the day and we didn’t want any kind of wedding where we wouldn’t get a chance to talk to people, or acknowledge the realities of my dad’s physical needs.

Cave Wedding Photos: The Bat Cave Bride and Groom TTD Session

trash the dress cave wedding TTD session

What would you do for amazing wedding photos? Would you climb down a ladder into a dark hole, wade through quickmud and dark water in your wedding gown, while bats are darting back and forth above your head? (Oh, and look out for the bat poo; it’s everywhere!)

This bride did. (The groom did too, but he didn’t have to navigate a cave wearing a gown.)

Check out the video on how this trash the dress (TTD) session was filmed.

The Ups and Downs of a DIY Wedding

I had a DIY wedding. I made the wedding favors (handmade soap and CDs), the wedding programs, and my sister-in-law made the invitations and place cards. With help, I even made my own bridal bouquet and centerpieces.

I know the pain and I know the pride of having a DIY wedding. In fact, I share some of those ups and downs today in a guest blog post over at DIY Bride. Come on over and check it out.

Wedding Guest Photos: Don’t Let them Get Trapped!

wedding guests taking photos

Does anyone use disposable cameras anymore? I hope not. Not when just about EVERYONE has a digital camera.

The downfall of digital cameras is that they trap photos. How many photos do you have on your computer that you’ve never bothered to print? (I have thousands. Literally.)

And when it comes to weddings, you can bet that many of the photos that your snap-happy guests take during your wedding will never be shared. That’s why you need a DIY Photo Download Station! All you need is a laptop, a card reader, and someone willing to man the station. Check out how to make your DIY Photo Download Station here.

Another clever option is a Flickr account and cute little cards to remind your guests to upload photos to your account.

DIY Wedding Drinks: Make Your Own Watermelon Keg and Spiked Watermelon

diy wedding drinks make your own watermelon keg

My husband and I spent the morning digging in the dirt. We’re making raised beds in our backyard to plant veggies and berry bushes. Hauling wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow of topsoil can cause a sudden craving for watermelon. Thankfully, I had some on hand.

Watermelon is fruit of the gods. There is nothing better than a cool piece of sweet watermelon after hours of manual, outdoor labour. Nothing better, except maybe a cold drink, served right out of a fresh watermelon!

When I stumbled on this DIY watermelon keg tutorial on evite.com, I couldn’t help but think that this would be perfect for an outdoor wedding - or any outdoor party for that matter!

Here’s what you need:

  • 10-pound seedless watermelon
  • Sharp knife
  • Big spoon
  • Big bowl
  • Drill with a 1/2-inch drill bit
  • 3/4-inch ball-valve faucet with a handle that’s easy to turn with one hand
  • PVC-to-faucet adapter that will screw into the back of the faucet
  • Rubber O-ring that fits the back of the faucet
  • Blender
  • Sieve
  • Pitcher
  • 1 1/2 cups rum
  • 4 limes

The project takes about 90 mins and costs $20 (not including alcohol).

Step Two: Print out the envelope template on card stock. This template will make 5.5″ x 4″ inch envelopes.

Step Three: Find a page that you like from the book. (If you want all the envelopes to be the same, simply make a copy of the page.)
