like birds on a wire,
wooden claws

and nightgowns
that flap freely
above country lawns
and dark alleys.
Perched in trees,
on silver branches,
doors,
and fences.
Holding signatures,
hearts and wishes.
Pretty
and plain.
Ever
practical.
