Why did you have an intimate wedding?

Ben: We both think that big weddings are kind of gross. Not the bigness, per se, but the fact that it just can’t be an intimate event once it gets to a certain size and once enough other people get their hands into planning it. Why would we have a wedding other people set up for us when, instead, we can have our ideal mega-fun party that is also our wedding?

What are some the challenges that you faced planning an intimate wedding?

Ben: Doing everything ourselves was a big challenge. Designing and printing invites, building our photobooth, doing all the location setup and decorating, we didn’t hire out for much more than our photographer and our caterer. It’s both the most fun and absolutely most stressful part of doing the wedding this way. At the worst, two days before the wedding, we looked at each other and said “Why didn’t we run off and elope somewhere? This is terrible.” The day after that, right before the wedding, it all kind of calmed down and it was smooth sailing after that. It was totally worth the effort and madness to make it happen. Because we did it all ourselves it was also exactly what we wanted, despite some minor head-butting about what we wanted to do and what tradition dictated. Our way won out, and it was super fun.

Was it difficult to pare down the guest list?

Ben: Since my family isn’t local and are all spread about the Midwest, and Amber’s family is not huge, it was actually pretty easy. The guest list was quite a bit bigger than the list of folks who attended due to the distance.

Did you have any ‘issues’ with the small guest list from friends and family?

None.

What were the highlights of the ceremony?

Amber: Walking out with my father, to one of my favorite Wilco songs, and seeing so many friends and family standing there in the gorgeous backyard.  I loved having everyone standing because I got to walk through them in a much more intimate manner than if it had been an aisle in seating.  I got to see all the guests’ joyful expressions up close and that was amazing.  It was like I got to share a tiny personal moment with every guest I made eye contact with.

What were the highlights of the reception?

Amber: The photobooth really stole the show.  It was adorable and awesome to see grandparents tugging on sleeves and herding people in there.  I love how it wasn’t just the young people who got excited about it.  Even the caterers had a blast taking pictures later in the night!  I feel like it’s got to be a special wedding if even the caterers are having a great time. It was even better for Ben, he and his brother built the photobooth for the wedding and seeing it go over so well was pretty great.

What was the best thing about having an intimate wedding?

Amber: It was wonderful having the time to really take part in everything.  Because we had a smaller guest list I was able to participate in everything and take time to really make memories with more of the guests, such as dancing with the preschoolers and cheering for the pinata batters.

What advice do you have for couples who are considering an intimate wedding?

Amber: Having a smaller wedding gives you a lot more freedom in really every aspect of what you are able to plan.  Because our wedding was small we were able to use a non-commercial venue, we weren’t tied to specific caterers and other expensive (and generic) vendors.  We got to have exactly the food, drinks, and DJ we wanted, all while saving a TON of money AND making our wedding more fun. Oh and whatever you do, get a good photographer!

Why did you have an intimate wedding?

The main reason we had an intimate wedding was because we wanted to be able to enjoy every aspect of our wedding and not have to worry about mingling with a large group of people.  July 29th was our special day and we wanted everyone who was special in our lives there.  You could really feel the love in our quaint group of guests.  Our personalities are ones that don’t scream “Big Wedding”.  We just wanted to be married and all the focus to be on our love, not how much we spent on the big day.

What are some the challenges that you faced planning an intimate wedding?

After speaking with friends and other brides, I must say that we had it pretty easy as far as our planning went – thanks to our venue, Cedarwood. Finalizing the guest list was probably the hardest thing to deal with because we could only have so many people attend in order to achieve our special horse shoe dining table shape.  Deciding on music was also tough because we weren’t sure if anyone would feel comfortable dancing in such a small group.  Luckily we knew our friends pretty well and decided that they would probably dance if given the chance, and they did!

Did you have any ‘issues’ with the small guest list from friends and family? If so, how did you address them?

Everyone we knew was aware that we were having an intimate wedding, so we didn’t really run into any issues.  We did, however, have trouble trying to decide where to seat people since the table we used placed people in such close proximity to one another.  We didn’t want people sitting next to others they may not exactly “mesh” well with.

What were the highlights of the ceremony?

The highlight was having Drew’s Grandfather, Bill Perry, officiate the ceremony.  It was so nice to have “Pawpaw” add personal touches about Drew and I that I am sure no one else would have been able to do.  He completely designed the ceremony to fit us and it was beautiful.

What were the highlights of the reception?

Some of the most poignant moments of the reception were the speeches.  My Dad gave the most touching speech that I will never forget and Drew’s best man, Kyle, added touches of humor within his moving words to his best friend.  I’ll also never forget watching my parents and grandparents dance with all my friends.  It was a first and will probably be the last time I see that happen!  We used an iPod and near the end of the night some of our guests decided to take it upon themselves to go off the play list which wasn’t the greatest of ideas.

intimate nashville farm wedding

What was the best thing about having an intimate wedding?

The best part was that we had the chance to spend all of our time with friends and family that mean the most to us.  Everyone could see everything that was happening and could hear everything being said.  Having an intimate wedding also allowed us to cut down the planning time to 4 months!  I didn’t have time to stress.  Being at Cedarwood felt like a big family vacation that was over too fast.

What advice do you have for couples who are considering an intimate wedding?

I would say make sure that you check in with yourself every once and while and make sure that all the decisions you are making are ones that YOU want.  It’s was great feeling leaving for our honeymoon knowing that we got to talk to every one of our guests and didn’t leave out a third cousin or a parent’s co-worker who we only met once before the wedding.  I had so many compliments from people who go to tons of weddings.  They say our wedding was the most fun because it didn’t feel like a typical modern wedding.  In the end, we got everything we wanted, everyone had fun, and we get to spend the rest of our lives together.

From the Wedding Planner/Venue:

Shantel and Drew had no shortage of “something blue” at their intimate farm wedding. Blue flowers, butterflies and rainbows graced gorgeous blue skies in a perfect setting for a summer country wedding. Intimate reception seating involved every guest in the gala with table top style.  Cobalt blue details and decor paired with burlap, galvanized pails of green apples, and wildflowers in French flower buckets pulled together a rustic chic vibe perfect for a southern farm wedding. Blue and green are a perfect pairing for summer, especially with the ‘just picked from the field’ bouquets and floral décor.

Ten More Reasons to Have a Small Wedding

intimate wedding photography - reasons to have a small wedding

By Lizzie Smithson

Christina has her own Ten Reasons to Have a Small Wedding. I thought I’d offer 10 more good reasons to snip, snip, snip.

1. Rush Order

With fewer people and details to oblige, you’ll have the option to cut down your time-line. Want to be married by this time three months from now? Not if you have 150+ guests, you don’t.

iceland intimate wedding venue

2. Spare Feelings

With a small wedding, you have an easy out to tell people who aren’t invited. If you’re having a large gathering, it gets a little harder to tell them why they didn’t make the cut.

3. Have a Lavish Honeymoon

It’s inevitable during the planning process to, at some point, want to speed up to the honeymoon. Have the getaway you pictured in your mind with more money available to spend and less worry on your brow while you enjoy the time away.

4. Leave the Option for a Destination Wedding

Whether your dream is getting married on the beach or eloping at city hall, you leave the option open with a smaller guest list. Asking 150+ people to travel or fit within city hall is a bit trickier.

5. Have a Moment Alone with Your New Spouse

Stop. Soak it in. It’s not something many couples get to do on their wedding day because of stress, obligatory conversations and details they have to manage and take care off. Take a moment to enjoy each other on your wedding day, because that’s what it’s all about, right?

bride and groom first look - intimate, small wedding

6. You Don’t Have to Make Small Talk with Mere Acquaintances

You don’t care to meet up with that one friend you had from way back when (even though she is on your Facebook friends list)  – especially on your wedding day. Your second cousin that you haven’t seen in ten years? Not interested. And what about that handful of co-workers who bore you to tears? With a small wedding, there is no pressure to include them.

7. Keepsake Photos

With too many guests, it could be something like herding cats to get the keepsake family photos you will someday want. If you don’t want them now, mom & dad, grandparents and children someday will.

intimate wedding style and fashion

8. Go Green

Save the rainforests! Save the polar bears! Save the cheerleader…Wait. There is an exceptional amount of waste that is involved with weddings. With less people, you’ll have less paper to send out (saving you from writer’s cramp in the thank you note arena as well), less food, less trinket favors and less waste all around. You’ll also have a pretty fool-proof out for those that question their lack-of-invitation…because who will argue with a polar bear?

9. You Can Cut Loose

With your friends and family in a comfortable setting, you’ll feel free to dance, play music you actually like and celebrate like you just got married.

dancing bride at small, intimate wedding

10. It’s a Wedding, Not a Reunion

There’s no need to pay $30-$100 per head for dinner to rekindle old friendships. It may seem like a good idea when you’re planning, but when you’re sharing your first kiss as a married couple and Suzy-in-Everyone’s-Business stares at you with that I’m-totally-tweeting-this smile, you’ll wish you had chosen closer friends and family to share your day with.

Botanical Favors and Decor

By Lizzie Smithson

I have a confession to make: I have never loved flowers. I like getting them on celebratory occasions, of course. But, I have to admit, I’m loving the growing trend of botanical favors and decor.

Whether you want to send a ‘green’ message to your guests or you don’t want to pay big bucks for a florist, there are many unique ways to showcase plants within your wedding style.

Add Water Decor

Succulents in simple, DIY planters would make a beautiful statement in a loft or gallery wedding. You can personalize the base planters to fit within your color scheme or go neutral (as shown) to keep it simple.

succulent diy wedding decor mod

These bubble vases would definitely make a statement at a museum or gallery wedding. I love how they show off simple buds! Keep it elegant and modern with a simple style or go quirky with the leg variations pictured below.

For a pair of bookworms, these creative planters would be an excellent centerpiece for an outdoor wedding (not quite sure how all that dirt is kept neatly in there)! You can also use some colorful magazines to add some extra punch.

alternative planter in stack of books for wedding centerpiece

Using a small tree as a table number would be an excellent idea for an eclectic or natural indoor wedding or a fun and laid-back outdoor wedding. I love the idea of clothes-pinning a table number to the top and you can easily tie-in this idea elsewhere by using the trees as decor for the dessert and gift tables.

plant centerpieces for wedding

Mixing up succulents with your cake platters on the dessert table instantly adds a modern, yet home-grown, touch to your decor.

Sweet minis would make a cute addition to a long, rectangular-style table reception…I feel if I was sitting in front of these beauties, I’d be enthralled by their simplicity. Who says you need a giant or loud centerpiece anyway?

Give’Em Something to Grow Favors

Succulents are everywhere. These square tins and lovely labels take a small, beautiful gift in a new direction. You can dress up your succulents within any theme with unique, small details.

diy favor succulent

I love the idea of dried flowers and a small candy in a tiny metal pot. You can personalize this idea with moss and a flower pick label, potpourri instead of flowers or a small plant in soil.

It seems that I fall a bit more in love with terrariums each time I see them. These terrarium light bulbs with a simple tag are fresh and inspiring. You can take the idea in an ornament direction or double the favors as place cards.

DIY Name Cards Made from Shrinky Dinks

DIY name cards made from Shrinky Dinksare a blast to make – and they’re perfect for couples who want to add a bit of fun and whimsy to their wedding. They double as favors too.

When I was a kid I pined for Shrinky Dinks, but to no avail. Fast forward 30 years and I’m finally getting my Shrinky Dink Fix! Honestly, I can’t get enough! I even had to buy the refill kit because my kids and I have been on such a Shrinky Dink tangent.

Not only can you make name cards, but also fun and creative pendants, charms and bracelets for your bridesmaids and flowergirls.

Here’s the DIY on the name cards:

Shrinky Dinks shrink. A lot. Here’s how much they shrink:

diy-wedding-name-cards

Keep this in mind before you get to work.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. If you don’t want to use your oven, you can also use a toaster oven.

Grab your Shrinky Dink sheet (you can buy Shrinky Dinks here) and cut out a rectangle. (Mine was 2 inches wide by 8.5 inches long for six letters.) Measure out a box for each letter and pencil it in. (You will erase these lines later on.)

Draw your letters with a permanent marker on the shiny side of the sheet. I did mine freehand, but you can also find letters you like and trace them.

Use a Rounded Corner Punch on each corner. Also use a hole punch and punch a hole in the top.

rounded-corner-punch

Erase the pencil lines that you  used as guides. Turn the sheet over and colour in your design with coloured pencil.

Place your design on a parchment paper lined baking sheet – coloured pencil side up.

Place in oven for 2-5 mins. (Don’t leave unattended. Stay put and watch the magic happen through the oven window.)

Remove your design and place a piece of parchment paper over it. Pile some books on top and let it cool for a few minutes.

Voila! Add a jump ring and a spring clasp and your creation can be added to a key chain, or become a cellphone charm or zipper pull.

You can use these as name cards for your wedding. Simply add to your napkins or prop them up against something.
