The Big White Wedding Industry 101 should be a mandatory course in university and Rebecca Mead’s book One Perfect Day: The Selling of the American Wedding should be required reading.
Since that’s not going to happen any time soon, I recommend to anyone who is engaged to read this book. It will open your eyes.
It tears back the curtain from the wedding industry and gives you a glimpse inside the big, white wedding machine. A machine that ain’t so pretty.

I read and totally loved this book. Though I am a floral designer and earn my living through weddings, I have always been a bit counter culture, home schooled my 7 kids, shy away from the doctor (unless needed of course), bake my own bread etc… I keep trying to figure out where our culture made the turn to “queen for a day” rather than the simple pleasure of getting married? I think it may have been in the 80′s with princess Diana and then our cultures fascination with celebrities. Think about it, a wedding day is a chance for a bride to have her red carpet moment, but in all of this, have we lost something? The sacredness of wedding vows, the joy of the celebration of 2 people coming together? (Since the book has been written I guess I can stop now) Anyhoo, I think the book is a must read. With all that said, I love weddings, love designing, it’s my passion, just like it when our hearts are in the right place.
