Why did you have an intimate wedding?

Jon and I are a very creative couple, and wanted to do something really fun for our wedding.  We chose to have an Art Nouveau/Art Deco themed wedding, and asked all of our guests to dress up in 1900-1920s attire. To our delight, every single guest did! It was so much fun! I approached the entire wedding as an art project, and I couldn’t possibly be happier with how it all turned out!

Our primary reason for having a small wedding was financial. Another reason for the smaller guest list was the limited amount of guest rooms at the lodge where the wedding was held. We also wanted the wedding to completely emulate us and our personal styles, and we felt that a smaller, more intimate wedding would truly reflect us. The whole wedding was DIY. We designed the invitations (with help from my amazing artist Uncle), the centerpieces and bouquets. The feather fascinators, birdcage veil, and customized guest baskets for all the overnight guests were also DIY. My wedding dress and Jon’s tuxedo jacket and vest were also custom made for us by my amazing seamstress mother.

What are some the challenges that you faced planning an intimate wedding?

Our biggest challenge in planning an intimate wedding was dealing with the wedding budget. Although it was a DIY wedding, it still was not cheap! We didn’t want to go into debt to pay for the wedding, so we made a list of our priorities, and then cut down on everything else. I, being an artist, absolutely needed an amazing photographer (Tinywater Photography, which was SO WORTH IT!), and Jon, being a chef, absolutely needed delicious food (we had a sit down dinner, and it was great!).

Was it difficult to pare down the guest list?

We had to cut our wedding guest list a few times. It was certainly difficult cutting the list at first, but we knew it was the only way for us to have the wedding we really wanted. We limited our guests to only very close friends and family members. When more distant friends or family asked us about our wedding planning, we were sure to tell them we were planning a very small, intimate wedding, and I know they all understood. The result was amazing, though. We felt so much love from our guests. It was a really magical event.

Did you have any ‘issues’ with the small guest list from friends and family? If so, how did you address them?

We didn’t really have any trouble with the small guest list. I’m sure a few people felt a little left out, but every guest who came to our wedding truly knew Jon and I as individuals, and as a couple, and we felt like that was really important.

What were the highlights of the ceremony?

My favorite memory from the ceremony: Our ceremony took place in a small meadow overlooking a vast valley and the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. As I stood at our “altar,” looking into the eyes of the love of my life, I could hear the quiet echo of nature to my left, and the tangible love emanating from our family and friends to the right of me. My cousin Erika served as our officiant, and wrote a beautiful ceremony just for us. Jon and I wrote our own vows. We both laughed, and we both cried, and I think all of our guests did, too. It was truly an amazing moment.

What were the highlights of the reception?

We had the wedding at an historic inn that used to be a bordello for the Foresthill miners. We got the entire inn for two nights, so all of our guests stayed with us the night before, and the night of the wedding. The hotel also had an awesome game room, so people were playing pool, ping pong, shuffleboard and Rock Band late into the night!

My favorite moment from the reception: Being able to relax, celebrate, and enjoy our wedding with all of our favorite people in the world was so much fun for us. The food was amazing, and our cake was so delicious! I would say the most fun, was when Uni, our Ukelele player, sang some beautiful songs, and we danced and sang along. Also, taking photos with crazy hats that the venue had… and listening to our friend Alan rock out on the piano… the late night appetizers, and an acoustic set from my cousin Erin B.

I also loved the DIY bouquet making party that my maids and I had the night before the wedding. I bought a bunch of flowers from Trader Joe’s, and the girls and I all made our own bouquets. While we made the bouquets, we could hear all the wedding guests playing pool, shuffleboard, ping pong and Rock Band in the game room right next to us. It was so great knowing that everyone was having such a good time, and I didn’t have to worry about playing “host.”

What was the best thing about having an intimate wedding?

The best thing about having an intimate wedding was knowing that all of our wedding guests truly know and support Jon and I. We were so much more relaxed, and enjoyed mingling with all our friends and family. We were also able to have a delicious sit down dinner, and DIY almost everything. Overall, I felt that having a smaller wedding allowed us to customize every detail of the wedding, and to have a fun and artsy wedding that truly reflects both of us as individuals, and as a couple.

What advice do you have for couples who are considering an intimate wedding?

My advice for couples considering an intimate wedding is to remember that your wedding is an expression of the love shared between you and your partner. Don’t worry about other people’s expectations for your event, and do what symbolizes you two as a couple. ENJOY IT! Have fun, and don’t stress! Don’t be afraid to ask for help from family and friends, trust me, they want to help!

It is so easy to get lost in the crazy hubbub of the wedding industry. Having a smaller, intimate wedding allows you to customize your wedding to truly fit you as a couple.

What about a Books and Coffee Theme Wedding?

Book Cake

You’re a bookworm. You’ve got a bookcase jammed with novels aand one of your favourite places in the universe is the library.

And what goes better with a good book than a cup of coffee? Which means that you love cafes just as much as libraries. In fact, the café is one of your favourite places to go with your fiancé.

Why not have a coffee and books theme reception?  You could have the wedding at a quaint inn or bed and breakfast, and decorate the reception room to look like a café. Use vintage café posters on the walls and have a swanky jazz band to provide just the right café ambiance.

Here are some more ideas to help you pull it off:

Stationery – Use coffee colored stationery or use paper with coffee cup motifs, cocoa bean motifs, or book motifs.

Flowers/Centerpieces/Décor – Using clear vases filled with coffee beans. Stack old books in centre of table. Place vase on top of books.

Colors – Use dark shades of brown. Brown looks great with pink, pale blue, crimson.

Food – Have a lunch reception and serve gourmet Panini or go all out with a seated meal. Carry the theme over by having a coffee bar that serves espresso, late, and other gourmet coffees, along with plenty of decadent chocolate and mocha desserts. Hire a barista to serve the beverages. If you are serving alcohol, offer Irish Cream coffee and Kahlua.

Favors – Buy used books that look brand new, wrap them in paper that compliments your wedding colors, and give them as favours. Or buy gourmet coffee beans for guests, or chocolate covered coffee beans. What about Coffee Mugs filled with delicious chocolate goodies?

Carnival Chic Wedding: Theme Wedding Big on Fun

carnival theme wedding

Maybe it’s the neutral grey-brown hues of a winter thaw that have me craving colour. Or maybe it’s all the work I’ve been doing lately that is making me crave something playful. Whatever it is, I’ve had carnivals and circuses on the brain lately and I’ve been thinking of how much fun it would be to have a ‘carnival-chic’ wedding. One with happy foods like candy apples, cotton candy, lemonade. One with bright colors, bold stripes and laughter. One that is playful, yet stylish. I created this ‘carnival themed’ inspiration board to transport my vitamin-D deprived winter self to a sunny, summer, carnival day.

Tips for a Winter Wonderland Wedding

haddonfield winter wonderland wedding

Did you know that one in four couples ties the knot during the winter? Many couples love the romance of the season – and they love the cost savings. Couples can shave big-time bucks off their wedding costs by having a winter wonderland wedding. Venues are generally less expensive and vendors sometimes offer off-season rates.
Here are some great ideas and tips for winter brides:

• If guests are arriving from out of town, have them arrive a couple of days early just in case of inclement weather.

• Consider having a winter wonderland wedding theme, using snowflakes as your motif. Silver and pale blue make a lovely color combination. Use pine boughs and evergreens as decorations. Serve comfort foods such as soups, prime rib and decadent chocolate desserts.

• If you are a winter sports enthusiast, combine your favorite sport with your nuptials. Have a skating party the night before the wedding. Have a destination wedding at a ski chalet. Get married at a cozy lodge and include dog sledding as one of your guest activities the day before the wedding.

• Dress Warm. Winter brides should choose a long sleeved gown, instead of spaghetti straps.

• Serve hot beverages such as cocoa and cider at the reception to keep guests toasty.

• Find a venue that has a fireplace. It will really make things cozy!

• Depart in a horse drawn sleigh. That is, if there is snow for your winter wonderland wedding!

• Snuggle up. It’s not like the two of you will need an excuse to get close after your wedding is over, but a chill in the air might make you hold on just a little tighter!

10 Tips for a Christmas Wedding

As the song goes “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.” And what a great time of the year to get hitched! Here are 10 tips for getting married during the holidays:

1. Start shopping for your wedding decorations and favours early. Purchase Christmas ornaments, ribbon, lights, etc. just after Christmas (the year before your wedding) when they are on sale.

2. Book your venue well in advance. The Christmas season is a hugely popular time of year for functions.

3. Let out-of-town guests know well in advance that you are having a holiday wedding so they can make travel arrangements and book accommodations before the holiday rush.

4. Have out-of-town guests arrive a couple of days in advance, in case of inclement weather.

5. Have Santa act as the emcee, or have him simply hand out favours.

6. Serve hot beverages, such as cocoa and hot cider at the reception to keep guests cozy.

7. Make sure venue will be decorated for Christmas by paying a visit. If not, enlist the help of friends and family to make it festive.

8. Instead of a gift table, have guests place gifts under a Christmas tree.

9. Have Christmas carolers provide music during cocktail hour.

10. To keep warm, wear a long-sleeved gown

Theme Wedding Ideas to get You Inspired

Butterfly Dress

The possibilities for a themed wedding are only limited by your imagination. Here are just a few theme wedding ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

African safari – Make the wilds of Africa part of your themed wedding. Have animal print tablecloths, guests in safari attire, African food and music, safari themed centerpieces and favors.

Alice in Wonderland – Bring elements of this Lewis Carroll fairytale into your themed wedding. Why not have a tea party? Use Alice in Wonderland character cut outs such as the White Rabbit, and the Cheshire Cat in your décor. Have the groom dress as the Mad Hatter.

Angel – Bring a celestial charm to your wedding. Cherubs in all shapes and sizes can be used as a motif for all your wedding related decor.Aquatic - Since beach weddings are so popular this is one of the most common themed wedding ideas. Even if you aren’t getting married at the beach or on a boat you can still use elements of the sea in your wedding.

Baseball – Some baseball enthusiasts love the sport so much that they tie the knot on a baseball diamond. If you don’t want to go that far, you can still use baseball as your wedding theme by incorporating this sport into your wedding. Give baseball shaped chocolates as favors, and have your wedding cake made in the shape of a bat and ball. You could even dress the part, and encourage guests to do the same.

Bees – Have these busy little insects as your theme by using the bee motif in your décor. Serve baklava for dessert, and give jars of honey as gifts. Also have your wedding cake made in the shape of a bumblebee.

Butterfly – Are you a butterfly enthusiast? Use the butterfly motif in all aspects of your themed wedding – from the stationery to the wedding cake. If you’re wedding is outdoors, some real ones might even show up!

Carnival - Still a kid inside? Fun theme wedding ideas are to rent carnival games, cotton candy machines, snow cone makers, and other fun items to give your wedding the feeling of a carnival. One thing is for sure: kids will love it.

Cars – Are you and your partner car buffs? Why not make cars part of your wedding theme? Arrive in your favorite car (this might be a ’69 Mustang rather than a traditional limousine). Use model cars in your décor and have the wedding cake made in the shape of a car.

Chocolate- This is one of the yummier theme wedding ideas. If you’re crazy about chocolate (who isn’t), why not use it as your theme? Use rich chocolate browns when decorating. Dark brown candles could be used as centerpieces – so could bowls or baskets filled with fancy chocolates. Also use chocolate place cards – and chocolate favors, and have several chocolate desserts, including a chocolate wedding cake. What about a chocolate fountain?

Cinderella – Although you might have a hard time finding a carriage in the shape of a pumpkin to bring you to your wedding, you can still be Cinderella for the day by taking other elements of this hugely popular fairy tale and incorporating them into your wedding. (Actually you can find a carriage in the shape of a pumpkin – but it’s a cake topper.) Decorate with magic wands, crowns and miniature castles.

Daisies – It’s simple to base the theme of your wedding on this lovely flower. Use daisies in all of your bouquets and centerpieces, and also place candy daisies on top of your wedding cake. Find invitations that include this flower and use pressed daisies on your place cards. Give seed packets of daisies as favors.

Golf - If you and your partner love to spend time on the golf course, why not make it part of your theme? Have the wedding at a golf and country club. Give golf balls (with your names and wedding date) as favors. Have your wedding cake created in the shape of a mini-golf course.

Gothic – Is black your favorite color? Are you crazy about Dracula movies and Ann Rice books? Why not have a gothic wedding? Gothic style weddings aren’t that uncommon. They usually involve plenty of black and they definitely don’t adhere to tradition. A gothic wedding can take place anywhere – from a graveyard to an old mansion.

Mickey Mouse – If you are having your wedding at Disney World, then bringing this popular cartoon character into your wedding will be a breeze. If you’re having the wedding elsewhere, simply use the Mickey Mouse motif in your décor. You could even have someone dress the part and show up during the reception. Don’t forget to have the DJ play the Mickey Mouse theme song during the reception.

Motorcycles - What about arriving to your wedding on a Harley? If you were a real motorcycle enthusiast this wouldn’t seem like an outlandish idea. And if all your friends were bikers too, a procession through town, with everyone – including the bride and groom – would only seem natural. Other ways to incorporate the biker theme into a wedding is to use the Harley Davidson theme colors of orange and black and either have your wedding cake made in the shape of a motorcycle, or use a motorcycle cake topper.

Roses – A rose theme wedding is perfect for the summertime when roses are in full plan. Incorporate the rose theme into your wedding by having a ‘rose ceremony’ during your wedding ceremony. Have the wedding in a rose garden, and use roses in all of your bouquets and centerpieces. Use roses made of icing to decorate your wedding cake. Give single roses as favors.

Zoo – Okay, it might sound like the most outlandish of the theme wedding ideas, but if you love wild animals, why not have a zoo theme. Lions and tigers and bears – not to mention snakes, leopards and lizards. Imagine having these creatures as part of your wedding? Some zoos open their doors to couples wanting to getting married there. Couples can use animal motifs in their décor, including animal print tablecloths, and chair covers. Tropical plants can be used as centerpieces, and vines can be placed along the walls. Stationery with paw prints can be used, and a wedding cake can be made in the shape of a zoo animal.
