Yes and no. My fiancee lost his job due to downsizing in November 2008. He's still working part time while looking for a full time job. We'd only been engaged a month when he lost his job- so it seemed super stressful at the time. But since we decided from day one that ours would be super small and simple and mostly DIY, we haven't really had to deviate from any plans. Plus due to already pre-existing budget constraints, we weren't planning on having our honeymoon until 2010 anyhow.

I've cut out favors, anything "themed" and I'm planning to make my wedding desserts (with the help of friends of course). He'll wear a nice suit, I'll find a pretty off the rack ($100 or less) dress. And we're getting married in the garden of a the restaurant where our reception is- so unless there's a drought, I won't have to buy flowers for decorations. ... And so on. We'll make it work.

Sherry, thanks for sharing. You sound like a resourceful gal. I'm sure your wedding day will be lovely - and extra special with all of those DIY touches.

We had been planning a DW in Mexico until... my brother lost his job... FI's father's company filed for bankruptcy... and my father's job is looking shaky. With things as they are, we couldn't ask 3 of the 6 VIPs to spend that much money on our dream wedding, so... with less than 5 months to go, we started planning something at home. We are doing a lunchtime wedding (cuts out a lot of alcohol and allows for a less elaborate meal), we rented a place that allows for both ceremony and reception (and its a garden, so decorations needed are minimal). I bought my dress on EBay, FI is wearing a basic black suit (infinitely reusable) and I'm DIYing the centerpieces, decor and everything except my bouquet- I think we'll even DIY the dessert table and the cupcake tree! We are also using invitations from a box (we just print, combine and send out) rather than paying for fancy custom ones. There are tons of things you can do to make a wedding fantastic on a budget!

Jill, sorry to hear about all the job losses. It must be very stressful to deal with that, on top of planning a wedding.

The one good thing that's coming out of this recession is that it's really bringing out the resourcefulness and creativity of brides and grooms. DIY has never been bigger - and I think that's great. You will look back on your wedding and feel good that you and your loved ones played an important role in creating the unique touches that made your big day so special.
