I wish I could say that these cupcake wrappers made from paper doilies were my very own idea. I wish I could say that I was the genius behind this DIY brilliance.
I discovered these cupcake wrappers over here. I was skeptical at first, thinking that it looked too easy.
I asked Brittany over at Pink Peacock Paperie to whip me up a template for the cupcake wrappers. Then I tested it out on some doilies that I had kicking around in my arts and crafts room. They just happened to be the perfect size.
I was amazed at how easy they were to make and how pretty they looked. And if you lack patience like moi, you can stack multiple doilies on top of each other and cut out several at a time.
Here is the free cupcake wrapper template download.
Tutorial for Cupcake Wrappers Made from Doilies
You will need:
paper doilies
(Mine were just over 11 inches.)
pencil
glue stick
Place doilie on a flat surface.
Cut out cupcake wrappers from the template. Place the cut out wrappers on the doilie.
Trace along the inside curve and at the ends. Do not trace the outside curve.
Cut out the cupcake wrapper.
Using a glue stick, add glue to one of the edges of the wrapper. Wrap around cupcake and adhere. Fini! Wasn’t that a breeze? BTW, if you don’t want white cupcake wrappers, you can buy paper doilies in a myriad of colours online.

Adorable idea! You've inspired us to try it as well!

This is such a gorgeous, unique, and girly DIY! I absolutely love this idea and think that it would be perfect for a wedding shower! I am very inspired and think that this idea could also be translated on a bigger scale for other doily DIY's!
I love the doily look; sophisticated and simple!
I love the wraps! So much less expensive than the store bought!!
Super cute!!! If anyone is worried about using glue on food decorative items the doily edges could be pasted together with a tiny dab of icing ^_^
not sure I would recommend this to anyone else. My bride's maids made these for my shower and though they looked nice, they didn't seem to hold up, because the doilies are so flimsy and thin. These were good for my shower, but I'm considering buying the real thing for my wedding.
I am having samples sent from Paper Orchid (the closest I could find to look like lace), and I'm hopeful they will look good and be sturdy enough to last the evening.
Thanks for your comment J. Sorry to hear that they didn't hold up. Perhaps the type of doilies that you used were too thin?
I've seen doilies dyed with food colouring - just making a bath and dipping them in. Can't remembre where but it should be easily googleable. They came out pretty pastel colours.
The woman baking our wedding cupcakes also requested that we not use doilies, because she was concerned that they were too thin to hold up, especially if they absorb some of the butter from the frosting. I do hope this works out for other people though! I don't really have the time to investigate whether I can get thicker doilies, and we have the means to buy the cardstock liners, so we'll just go with that.
This is such a beautiful and cute way to dress up a cupcake! Great Tutorial!
just LOVE these! Beautiful!!!
Great idea!!!. I wanna ask you what size of doilies do you use for mini cupcakes?
tks
Hi Monica,
I haven't made them for the mini cupcakes so I'm not sure what size. You'd have to do some experimenting.
Do you bake the cakes first in wrappers and then place the wrapped cake in the doily?? I am the MOH in my best friends wedding and I am trying to find some cute classy ideas.
Thanks!!
So so very Cute!! Every year my family full of Girls have a Tea I will be taking cupcakes!!! I love this!
that is absolutely genius
That is just what I was looking for, thank you so much!
ive done this before they r so easy to make
looking for a cupcake wrapper template that i can cut out and use. low budget.
I made these wrappers for my daughters homemade wedding and they were a hit, I got 12 inch doilies and was able to get 3 wrappers from each one. There were eight doilies in a pack and was able to cut three packs at once. Went very fast, less than a hour and 144 wrappers
Thanks for the comment Sharon. Glad they worked out for you!
These are great, thanks!
Love the DIY. Your site is great for inspiration and thanks for posting this.
Thank you for the idea.....it's just what I needed for the Princess Baby Shower !!!!
You're welcome Jasmine!
I love this tutorial. I couldn't find any good books in the library about these kind of cake decorations. Thank you a lot!
Very cool idea! Thanks for sharing. I love to use Bella Cupcake Couture wrappers too. So easy to use and pretty! I like this tip if I want something lacy as well.
Spot on with this write-up, I truly assume this web site needs far more consideration. I’ll probably be again to read rather more, thanks for that info.
The Dollar Tree had 8 & 10 inch doilies with 32/pk...I'm checking them out today. I'll let everyone know if they work out. I'm hoping they aren't too flimsy (something tells me they are...dollar store product, lol) I might just double them up to thicken the paper so they stay sturdy. It will only cost me $8 to double them! Better than $60 for the 100 I need...
What a clever idea & so simple..... Thank you for sharing...
merci pour cette idée géniale, cela fait de très beaux wrappers
You can make lovely colors by dipping doilies in food colouring...
Such a great idea. I have started making my own cupcakes just recently and this would be a perfect gift idea. Loving everything on this blog so far by the way.
I love this idea. So easy and inexpensive, too. I am using this for my friend's sprinkle to hold donuts I'm baking. Thank you!
Cute idea Amy. Donuts? Yum!
