How to Safely Clean Your Wedding Rings

Posted on May 16, 2018 by Christina

    jewelers mutual cleaning jewelry

Your eyes lit up when he placed that shiny piece of eye candy on your ring finger. Since that day, your engagement ring has become a part of your identity; a symbol of your deep love for another human being. You have grown attached to this precious piece of jewelry and you don’t anticipate removing it from your finger anytime soon. That is, until the time comes when you have to clean it.

Like it or not, the grit and grime of daily living will find its way inside the grooves of your beloved ring. What’s the safest way to keep it looking shiny and new?

The Internet is filled with recipes for homemade jewelry cleaners, but not all of these recipes are worthy of your time. In fact, some can be downright harmful. One popular recipe, for instance, includes baking soda and witch hazel, which can be problematic. Witch hazel is acidic and won’t agree with soft or porous stones or plated jewelry, and baking soda can be abrasive, scratching softer stones and metals.

What is the best way to clean your ring, you ask? The insurance experts at Jewelers Mutual Insurance Group simply recommend water and dish soap – namely Dawn dish soap. Why should you trust their advice? Jewelers Mutual® is the only insurer in North America solely dedicated exclusively to jewelry insurance for over 100 years. The company employs GIA graduate gemologists and AGS certified gemologists who are truly experts in their field.

Without further ado, here is a step by step tutorial on how to clean your rings:

Place a few drops of Dawn dish soap into a small dish of warm water. Let the ring sit in the solution for a few minutes, longer if it’s very dirty.

Next, gently scrub with a new soft toothbrush. Old toothbrushes will have toothpaste residue, which could scratch the jewelry.

To rinse, place the item in a new container of lukewarm water. Make sure the water isn’t too hot or too cold, as some gemstones do not take well to drastic changes in temperature.

You can dry the piece off with a paper towel or a regular cloth, as long as you’re careful not to snag the prongs on the fibers.

    Voila!

Aside from babying that gorgeous new ring, you’ll also want to consider insuring it. Jewelers Mutual‘s policy is as comprehensive of insurance you could ask for, all at a reasonable cost. As part of their policy, they offer worldwide travel coverage; flexibility to work with your own jeweler; replacement with same kind and quality; optional $0 deductible; and coverage for loss, theft, damage and mysterious disappearance. Want to learn more about protecting your precious ring? Visit Jewelers Mutual, where can get your quote instantly by answering three questions. Protecting that beautiful ring is easier than you think.

James and Emily’s $600 Restaurant Elopement

Posted on May 14, 2018 by Christina

Emily and James had their dream wedding all planned out; the venue was booked, the dress was ordered and the floral designer was set. Then the news arrived; James was getting deployed early, before the wedding date. Just two days after receiving the news, James and Emily regrouped and chose to elope. Friends stepped in and did the bride’s hair and makeup, as well as the florals, and James and Emily were able to pull off this gorgeous elopement months before the original wedding date.

Thanks to Horn Photography and Design for capturing this heartfelt elopement.

    Emily & James

    Location: Atlanta, GA

    Wedding Date: May 24, 2017

    Number of Guests: 3

    Wedding Cost: $600

Wedding Ceremony Location: Parrish Restaurant on the Beltline

    Wedding Reception Location: Same

Why did you have an intimate wedding?

We eloped due to military deployment. We got engaged in March, planned an April 2018 wedding, and shortly after learned about a deployment in October 2017. Then, the deployment date changed again and thus chose to elope.

What are some the challenges that you faced planning an intimate wedding?

Limited challenges; because we chose to elope, we really only had to focus on ourselves and what we wanted. We did not have to worry about guests and just had the opportunity to most of what we wanted that worked for just us.

Was it difficult to pare down the guest list?

    Nope! #Elopement

Did you have any ‘issues’ with the small guest list from friends and family? If so, how did you address them?

It was less about a small guest list and more about it being an elopement. We did want some family present but because it was an elopement and a short timeframe, most people understood and we were able to have our special day. We did ensure videography so that we could share the ceremony with everyone afterwards.

What were the highlights of the ceremony/reception?

Our whole wedding (ceremony and reception) was a total of two hours.  Thus, the whole thing was kind of the highlight since every piece of a traditional wedding ceremony was condensed. I would say if I had to pick an overall highlight, it would be meeting my soon-to-be husband at the end of the staircase and walking down the aisle together.

What was the best thing about having an intimate wedding?

Just that; it was intimate. We were able to focus on what was important in the long-run – our marriage and each other. I think it really helped to eliminate the “noise” that is created around weddings, as it relates to pleasing so many people, having “instagram-worthy” decor, etc.

What advice do you have for couples who are considering an intimate wedding?

Do it! Despite circumstances and having things turn out completely opposite of what I originally intended, looking back I would not change it. Being able to focus on each other and our marriage and recognizing that the wedding is one day and our marriage is forever, really helped eliminate the pressure of a big wedding or even a future celebration reception. It’s all about perspective – reminding yourself what you want more: a wedding or a strong marriage?

Sara and Matt’s Elegant Paris Elopement

Posted on May 7, 2018 by Christina

Sara and Matt had their sights on an elopement even before they were engaged. After two years of being engaged, the couple decided to elope while on vacation in Europe.  With two months to spare before they jetted off to Paris, the couple managed to plan this stunning elopement, complete with a classic photo shoot by the Eiffel Tower.

Thanks to Paris Photographer Pierre for capturing this dreamy elopement.

    Sara & Matt

    Location: Paris, France

    Wedding Date: August 31st, 2017

    Number of Guests: 0

Wedding Ceremony Location: Medici Fountain in Luxembourg Gardens in Paris, France

    Wedding Reception Location: None

    paris elopement

Why did you have an intimate wedding?

We always wanted to elope and would joke about it even before we were engaged. Once we were engaged, the pressure to have a traditional wedding was present and we even entertained the idea. After two years of being engaged and no wedding plans in our future, we decided to elope when we were on vacation in Europe. The vacation was already planned and with 2 months before take off we started to plan our elopement.

We decided for an elopement because, to be honest, I hate being the center of attention so having a traditional wedding didn’t seem appealing to me. Weddings can also become a day for everyone else…Eloping in Paris, meant the day was all about us!

What are some the challenges that you faced planning an intimate wedding?

With our wedding being two months away, I knew I couldn’t be picky when it came to my wedding dress. I’m a plain Jane so I didn’t want anything extravagant. I liked the simple elegance of my gown. It has a little lace on the back with a small laced train which added a little something but nothing that was over the top.

Was it difficult to pare down the guest list?

    No guests.

Did you have any ‘issues’ with the small guest list from friends and family? If so, how did you address them?

    No guests.

What were the highlights of the ceremony?

The ceremony itself was beautifully done by our officiant Laura; she had us tearing up for most of it and we couldn’t be happier with our elopement.

What was the best thing about having an intimate wedding?

The first look was my favourite part of the wedding day. I already knew what Matt was already wearing/looked like so I was excited for him to see me. We rented a large apartment so we were able to get ready without seeing each other. We did our first look in the courtyard of the apartment building. It was perfect!

What advice do you have for couples who are considering an intimate wedding?

Just do it! Don’t worry about what your friends and family will say. It’s your life and you’ll be surprised on how accepting and happy people will be for you.
