Can You Really Afford the Wedding You Want?

Posted on January 31, 2020 by Christina

Before you’ve booked the venue, bought the wedding dress, and picked out the flowers, there’s something you and your sweetheart need to do: sit down and figure out how much you can afford to spend.

Perhaps this is one of the most dreaded aspects of planning your wedding. Perhaps any form of financial planning is enough to make you want to hide beneath the covers and scream “make it go away.”

Or maybe you’re one of the lucky ones. Maybe you derive sweet satisfaction out of meeting money-related challenges head on. Maybe seeing those numbers in front of you gives you a feeling of clarity and control. After all, numbers don’t lie. They let you know exactly where you stand.

Whether you fit into one of the above categories, or fall somewhere in between, there’s no getting around the fact that your wedding budget will play a key role in your wedding plans.

Perhaps it’s the sole reason you opted for a small wedding. Maybe you took a good, hard look at your finances and reasoned that a large wedding would put you and yours up to your eyeballs in debt. Maybe you decided that you’d rather slim down your budget, and save the extra cash for a down payment on a house, or a new car. Or perhaps you and your partner came to the conclusion that you’d rather funnel money into your investments, than blow thousands on a one-day event.

    How much can you afford?

Maybe you’re the type that oohs and aahs over pictures in bridal magazines. And even though you’ve opted for a small affair, perhaps you’d still love to have an elaborate wedding – with over-the-top floral arrangements on every table to a high profile 5-piece jazz band. Maybe you really want to go all out on your wedding.

The question is: Can you afford it, or will it put you and your honey in debt for years to come?

If you end up putting thousands of dollars on your credit cards, you could end up paying a lot more for your wedding than you ever imagined. Put it this way: Say you put $5,000 of your wedding related items on your credit card which has an annual interest rate of 18 percent.  If you make minimum payments of $100 per month, it would take you over 7.5 years to pay off the debt and you’d have paid back not only the $5,000, but also over $4,300 in interest!

The best way to stay within a budget you can afford is to start planning early. That way you can begin saving for your wedding months ahead. Opening up a special wedding account can be a good idea. Putting 10 percent of your paycheck into the account can make for a sizeable chunk of cash after several months of saving.

Planning ahead will also give you time to comparison shop and find bargains. Clearance sales can save you a bundle!

When it comes to your wedding budget it’s also wise for both of you to get involved and to keep close tabs on your wedding expenses. Just because you’re having a small wedding, doesn’t mean those expenses can’t add up quickly!

    Where your money will go

Even though your wedding will be small, you can still expect to spend most of your budget on your reception. Unless you are simply having appetizers or are having friends/family make the meal, food and beverages will make up a good portion of your wedding expenses.

Other significant expenses can be entertainment, attire, flowers, and photography.

The ceremony is generally one of the least expensive items.

     Typical Wedding Budget Breakdown

     50 percent – Reception

    2 percent – Ceremony

    8-10 percent – Attire

    8-10 percent – Flowers

    8-10-Entertainment/Music

    10 percent – Photography/videography

    2 percent – Stationery

    2 percent – Gifts

    2 percent – Wedding rings

2 percent  – Transportation and parking

    6 percent  – Miscellaneous expenses

Do You Have Bridal Anxiety Disorder (B.A.D.)?

Posted on January 29, 2020 by Christina

    Intimate Weddings Advice for Brides

Bridal Anxiety Disorder (B.A.D) is an epidemic. It affects mainly women in the prime of their lives and impacts their personal and work lives. The symptoms are: chronic worry; insomnia; irritability; feelings of inadequacy and self-loathing. These are accompanied by a compulsion to frequent Instagram and Pinterest at all hours of the day (and night) poring over images of perfect weddings and perfect brides which exacerbates feelings of inadequacy and envy.

The desire to have a ‘perfect’ wedding is nothing new, but for some, social media has made the pressure unbearable.

Although there are no medications on the market (surely, they are working on some) to cure B.A.D, the disorder can be treated successfully with a change of perspective. How does one accomplish that?

Stop comparing yourself to others! Your wedding will be even more incredible than the boatload of images you’ve been poring over. Why? Because it’s your wedding and you are (hopefully!) marrying someone that you want to spend the rest of your life with! If you are joyful about making this commitment, you will radiate that joy and that will make your day truly beautiful.

Another way to treat B.A.D is to slash your guest list.

    intimate wedding in nc

Opting out of a big wedding will not only cut down on the cost of your wedding, it will also let you get creative with your wedding venue choices. Inns, museums and restaurants are just a few options that will open up for you. (If you choose to elope, your options are endless! Why not go to the destination at the top of your bucket list to say I do and make an incredible vacation out of it for just you and your sweetheart and throw an informal party when you get home?)

By slashing your guest list, you’ll also feel more relaxed knowing that you are surrounded by your nearest and dearest. Your reception will feel more like a party with loved ones, than a formal event. With your friends and family in a comfortable setting, you’ll feel free to dance, play music you actually like and celebrate like you just got married. Heck, you can even invite your dog to hang out! (I did!)

    at home wedding

And your guests will appreciate the intimacy of a small wedding, not to mention the fact that you’ll actually be able to spend time with them during your wedding!

Remember, it’s your wedding, not a family reunion! There’s no need to pay $100 per head for dinner for relatives you only see at funerals. It may seem like a good idea when you’re planning, but when you’re sharing your first kiss as a married couple and cousin Lucy-in-Everyone’s-Business stares at you with that I’m-totally-Instagramming-this smile, you’ll wish you had chosen closer friends and family to share your day.

Another perk of a small wedding? You can steal some time with your spouse on your Big Day. Stop. Soak it in. It’s not something many couples get to do on their wedding day because of stress, obligatory conversations and details they have to manage and take care off. Take a moment to enjoy each other on your wedding day, because that’s what it’s all about, right?

Whether you choose to make the commitment without guests, or want to be surrounded by close friends and family, if you are true to yourself, you will look back on your special day without a single twinge of jealousy or envy.

Sure, you might deal with a snafu or two (they happen to the best of us!), but knowing that you are following your own truth with your wedding plans – not simply trying to impress others or doing something because it will look fantastic in Instagram photos, will go a long way to making your wedding the best wedding ever!

    Scottish Elopement Styled Shoot

Posted on January 27, 2020 by Christina

Hannah Ford from The Light Painters sent over today’s dreamy styled shoot set in the breathtaking Scottish highlands. Here’s what she had to say about the shoot:

No fuss, no frills, just us!

I’ve been dying to shoot in Scottish highlands for a while now so I am so excited to have finally made it a reality. David & I ( The Light Painters) got engaged in the highlands so it’s been a place that has always had an element of romance for us.

We wanted to create a moody and wild elopement styled shoot in the Scottish highlands so the fact it was torrential rain throughout the entire shoot I guess we did almost ask for it!

Our vision was to keep the shoot totally stripped back and just included the core elements of an elopement to highlight one of the big advantages of eloping over have a big wedding which is not having to plan or spend a lot but just to keep it focused on the love of two people and the love for a place.

The dried bouquet by Green & Wildflowers is a great option for brides who are traveling a long distance to where they are eloping and don’t want the stress of sourcing something local to where they are getting married (especially if it’s in the middle of nowhere). The look we aimed for with the flowers knowing it would be an elopement in the highlands was wild, bohemian and natural in color tones to complement the surroundings, there was even a touch of dried heather in there. Dried bouquets are the perfect choice for outdoor/wild weddings and there’s so much to choose from nowadays. Not to mention you can keep your bouquet and pop it in a vase at home afterwards!

The gorgeous boho dress by Lisa Lyons Bridal tied in with the keeping it simple element of the shoot but still having the detail of the lace top. Lisa paired a floaty, silk georgette skirt with a fitted, crochet lace top. A beautiful lace with a geometric design, it has a vintage feel with a modern vibe. Separates are still on trend for bridalwear, so we selected made to measure pieces from Lisa Lyons Bridal.

We climbed to the top of a (very slippery) Scottish mountain side where Michelle & John read their personalised vows to each other in the pouring rain with beautiful stationery designed by White Cottage Weddings. We picked a secluded location in Glencoe, Scotland away from tourists and hikers to create an intimate place to say ‘I do’.
