Angelena and Matt’s Knitting Mill Wedding in North Carolina

Posted on February 22, 2016 by Stephanie

From early on in their wedding planning, Angelena and Matt were not only budget conscious, but also guest conscious; the idea of sharing their wedding day with only their closest family and friends was incredibly important to them.

The couple quickly discovered that most wedding venues cater to large guest lists, so finding a venue that suited their intimate wedding was a challenge. Thankfully, they discovered Melrose Knitting Mill, the perfect venue for their small guest list. The couple settled on a garden ceremony in a walled courtyard, followed by a lovely indoor reception. Here’s what their photographer, A.J. Dunlap Photography, had to say about their special day:

“This was such a darling wedding! The couple got engaged in June and decided to say their vows in August! Somehow, they pulled together this beautiful, intimate celebration in only 7 weeks! The bride actually handmade most of her decor including her bouquet, centerpieces, and cake. The personal touch she gave it made it so much more meaningful. They also made the joint decision not to have a wedding party and to walk each other down the aisle. They kept the focus on the vows they were saying, and every single second was so romantic.”

A big thank you to A.J. Dunlap Photography for sharing this beautiful intimate wedding with us.

Why did you have an intimate wedding?

We originally were planning on a courthouse wedding ceremony, with a big reception afterwards; however, after reviewing google images of Raleigh Courthouse Weddings, I just could not go through with it. I convinced my groom to go with a small, family-only ceremony followed by a reception (my foot in the door!). Overall we wanted to keep it intimate to our family and close friends, while also keeping the budget under control (as much as possible).

    raleigh-nc-intimate-wedding-angelina-matt-5

What are some the challenges that you faced planning an intimate wedding?

The most common problem was whittling down our guest list (when you really sit down and start considering everyone and how not to make someone feel excluded, etc.). Another problem we faced was finding a beautiful venue that was not overly large, but also not overly expensive. We found that the majority of vendors’ pricing was scaled to larger guest counts; although willing to work with us, you did not get the discount or “economies of scale” that you would with a larger wedding.

    raleigh-nc-intimate-wedding-angelina-matt-115

Was it difficult to pare down the guest list?

Initially, it quickly grew into a large guest list; but once we sat down with each other and set some guidelines and priority, it was easier to start reducing the number. We focused in on our family members of course and followed this with our very close friends. We also very quickly came to the conclusion that this was not a “bring your brother” or “bring your current fling” kind of wedding.

    raleigh-nc-intimate-wedding-angelina-matt-131

Did you have any ‘issues’ with the small guest list from friends and family? If so, how did you address them?

” In all honesty, we simply didn’t open up the guest list discussion to anyone but the two of us, avoiding the issue altogether. We had decided what type and size of wedding we wanted; therefore, felt that we were the best ones to decide on the guest list.

What were the highlights of the ceremony?

Our officiant worked with us to create a very special ceremony; it was based on questionnaires that we each filled out separately, containing questions around how we met, our relationship, and likes / dislikes. Using our answers, they wrote a ceremony script that was incredibly spot-on for our story, incorporating a non-religious view on love and marriage, along with a touch of engineering (the groom) as well as a touch of humor. It made for such an incredibly exceptional ceremony for us and really told our story and what was taking place in that moment to take us into our future.

What were the highlights of the reception?

We thoroughly enjoyed the reception; we were not only able to actually sit down and finish our meals but also made it around to all of our guests and were able to spend time with them. We have experienced several weddings as guests, and you almost feel bad for the brides and grooms because they are being hurried around and pushed here and there to make everyone else comfortable and say hello and spend their designated time with each set of guests. We were so happy that an intimate wedding, with a smaller guest list, allowed us to actually experience our own wedding from beginning to end.

What was the best thing about having an intimate wedding?

Our favorite takeaway from having an intimate wedding was actually being able to enjoy (while still breathing) ourselves throughout the wedding. Since we live in New Jersey with almost all of our close friends and family still living in North Carolina, it was such a delight to be able to not only get married but also spend time with people that we had not seen in months. Our guests were also able to enjoy themselves, eating and drinking to their hearts content (while we were able to maintain a decent budget) while celebrating such a special moment in our lives.

What advice do you have for couples who are considering an intimate wedding?

First and foremost, make sure you have thought through your expectations for a wedding as a couple. An intimate wedding can be really special but it’s not the typical wedding that we grow up seeing in movies. We did not mind not having a full-house and it was certainly a different feeling and type of party than larger weddings we had experienced; however, I do feel it’s the best choice for changing the pace and really letting the couple and their guests experience this type of celebration.

Melodie and Tim’s Intimate Backyard Wedding in Ontario

Posted on February 19, 2016 by Stephanie

Stephanie and Ben from Taylor Clark Photography shot this beautiful rustic wedding. Stephanie has been a contributor at IW, and we thought it would be great to hear about this wedding in her own words.

    Take it away Stephanie!

As an artist, it is always a simple joy to work with other people in the creative field. I had absolutely no doubt that our friends,  Tim the wickedly talented graphic artist, and Melodie the published illustrator, would put on a spectacular wedding. It was all about the special details, that as Melodie mentioned, were possible because they kept their guest list small. Between the handmade invitations, name cards, bouquets, wedding favors and dance stage (I could go and on!), every single person in attendance felt like a guest of honor.

It was an honor to capture their beautiful backyard wedding!

Why did you have an intimate wedding?

It suited who we are as a couple. We wanted to be focused on the commitment we were making and not just the ‘wedding’ part. It was important to have the people who had made a difference in our lives and who we know are there for us. Also, it was the bride’s dream to be married on her parents’ property, which limited the space and the ability to have anything large. Another factor was cost; we wanted to keep our costs down but still have something that was special.

What are some the challenges that you faced planning an intimate wedding?

Not having a wedding planner meant as the bride and groom, we did a lot!  Also by having an intimate wedding we had to cut the guest list, which was tough. To include everyone, we had a second event for our friends and family who couldn’t make it. That was a big undertaking, we were still very tired from the first event and planning. The second one took the wind out of us, but it turned out great and we are very happy we made the effort.

Was it difficult to pare down the guest list?

Of course, our families are pretty big so we had to cut there.

Did you have any ‘issues’ with the small guest list from friends and family? If so, how did you address them?

Didn’t seem to have many issues, the bride’s dad dealt with her side and the groom’s side well….we had one unexpected guest added. But other than that, we didn’t expect things to go so smoothly. People understood.

What were the highlights of the ceremony?

The vows were so special and we didn’t have to deal with stage fright since the crowd was small and we were able to be vulnerable. Other highlights (as we saw after) was our niece walking down the aisle; she didn’t get intimidated and was so darn cute. The bride’s brother also walked down the aisle with the bride’s dog, Wiley; it was so special to have him be apart of things. The entire night he was off leash and partied as much as us. The groom’s personal highlight was seeing his bride for the first time. The bride did have a vision of what she wanted to look like walking down the aisle and with the help of her mom, in making part of her dress, that became a reality. The whole ceremony felt perfect and special, even the sun setting through the trees as we were saying our vows added an amazing feeling and touch. It truly was magical (and I the bride don’t believe in fairytales).

intimate-backyard-wedding-melodie-tim-85What were the highlights of the reception?

The bride wanted twinkle lights in the tent and with the help of some great people setting it up, it was a success; it looked so beautiful and perfect. The dance floor was awesome outside under the stars; the groom decorated it in a way that was so magical and made for awesome photos. The bride’s brother also brought a smoke machine which was so fun! We love dancing, and were the last ones on the dance floor. We really loved everything and felt so blessed to have had such a perfect wedding in our own eyes.

What was the best thing about having an intimate wedding?

Since the costs were down and we weren’t accommodating a lot of people, we were able to do what we wanted with decorating, food and gifts. Most of the wooden items were made by the groom and bride’s father (dance floor, bar, arbor, etc.) and the invitations were handmade by the bride and groom, which made everything so special. We wouldn’t have been able to do that if it wasn’t an intimate wedding. We were also able to plan a wedding we wanted in less than five months and it wasn’t painfully stressful at all.

What advice do you have for couples who are considering an intimate wedding?

Do it! There is a lot less pressure when you are accommodating less people which makes planning so much easier. When you know the hand picked people around you love you and support you, it makes any mistakes or things that didn’t go right less of a big deal. It makes the saying ‘don’t sweat the small stuff’ a viable option. With a smaller crowd it makes budgeting easier and we were able to do other special things with the food and music that were a little pricey.

It’s your day and you should make the memories that your hearts’ desire.

Simple BoHo Styled Shoot: Ruby Tones & Tulle Skirts

Posted on February 15, 2016 by Stephanie

Kristi from Made to Be Mine was kind enough to share two stunning shoots that not only embrace the colder weather, but may very well change your mind about winter weddings from now on!

First, we have a simple, but out of this world beautiful bride and groom styled shoot. Shooting by the water is a dream for most photographers; on calm days  it serves as a perfect neutral backdrop. The bride and groom’s simple touches of bold color really pop, and make for a stylish pairing!

Here is what Kristi had to say about these photos:

There’s something so romantic about the water. It always seems pure, yet adventurous, the way romance should be.  The other wonderful thing about it is how lovely it looks ALL throughout the year – just like the style created in this shoot, which is anti-seasonal and beautiful year-round.  Add a sweater and some tights or go barefoot with your hair up, doesn’t matter, always gorgeous.

These two are so special.  They are beautiful, obviously, but their romance is so amazing.  At the time of this shoot, they weren’t engaged – that happened only weeks later.  But their romance is storybook.  They have been enduring long-distance for the past few years.  AJ is stationed in Chicago as a killer hairstylist and Sammy plays for the Washington Nationals.  Only weeks after this special shoot took place, he asked her to be his wife.  Their winter wedding is right around the corner, making this snowy riverside shoot very special.

Simply styled to look ethereal and romantic, AJ wore a maxi skirt from ASOS and a gorgeous lace crop from For Love and Lemons.  Sammy’s outfit was warm yet stylish, and the mauve and teal tones were reflective of the waterscape behind them.

Kristi decided to not only focus on the beautiful bride, but also the best friends of the bride, the bridesmaids (they deserve some love too, right?!). Here is a little more from the photographer:

I have been dreaming up a bridesmaids focused shoot for a while now. We give so much (DESERVING) attention to the bride, but what about her besties?  The girls that sat through every sob-story-broken-hearted-tale to get her there? They’re very important. VERY.  And the style they evoke is always reflective of the bride herself.  So I started thinking, what if I was the one getting married – what would I have my girls wear?  I’ve always thought that skirts were a gorgeous alternative to dresses.  I never ever ever want my girls to LOOK like bridesmaids, and if they got some future use out of their outfit, that would be so awesome.
