Congrats to all the brides out there who just got engaged. So glad you found us over here at IntimateWeddings.com. We’ve got lots of great stuff planned for 2010! Here are some photos to get you inspired.

I had to realign my jaw after seeing this photo by the WILDLY TALENTED UK photographer Gordon McGowan. And it’s from a real wedding! Look at that dress – not to mention the stunning architecture!

Jennifer and Scott got married at the Glasgow University Chapel.  Does a destination wedding in Scotland sound like a plan?

PostSecret: What is your secret?

December 10th, 2009 Christina Posted in Unique Wedding Finds 4 Comments »

postsecretlife

I love PostSecret. In case you don’t know what PostSecret is it’s ”an ongoing community mail art project, created by Frank Warren, in which people mail their secrets anonymously on one side of a homemade postcard. Select secrets are then posted on the PostSecret website, or used for PostSecret’s books or museum exhibits,” explains Wikipedia.

Some of the secrets are funny. Some will rip your heart out. Others will make you blush. Or cringe.

My question to you is: Do you have a wedding-related secret? Maybe you are scared out of your wits that you will shake like a flippen’ leaf at the altar. Or that your guests will leave behind all the the DIY favors you so painstakingly made for them. Maybe you’re afraid your maid of honour will cancel at the last minute, or that your brother will get rip roarin’ drunk and make an arce of himself. Or maybe your secret is that you hate the color brown, even though your color scheme is brown and orange.

I want to hear your confessions. Leave them in the comments section. Be anonymous if you want.  Or not. Need a little nudge? Watch this short movie.

Vintage Crockery For Hire? Vintage Weddings and Afternoon Tea Parties

November 18th, 2009 Christina Posted in Unique Wedding Finds, Wedding Trends 4 Comments »

vintage crockery for hire

tea party wedding

I go to yard sales. I go to rummage sales and flea markets. I go to second hand stores. I see dishes. Beautiful antique dishes – going for a song. But I don’t buy them because I don’t own a China cabinet and my cupboards are already busting at the seams. But someone could do wonderful things with these lovely old dishes. Like rent them out for vintage weddings.

Maybe I don’t get out enough, but until a couple of days ago I had never heard of such a thing as a vintage crockery rental business. Judging by the number of vintage crockery rental businesses online, it looks like it’s a hot little trend in the U.K. Are there similar businesses here in North America? If so, I’d love to hear about them. If not, what are you waiting for ladies? What a fun and creative business idea!

U.K’s My Vintage Party, for instance, hires out vintage crockery, linens and accessories for vintage weddings and afternoon tea parties. Each piece is priced individually. London’s The Crockery Cupboard and The English Tea Party also offer a similar service.

But My Vintage Party offers something unique to go along with the crockery rental; a vintage caravan!

Mexican Sugar Skulls

October 29th, 2009 Christina Posted in DIY Wedding, Theme Weddings, Unique Wedding Finds 2 Comments »

Sugar skulls? What the heck are those? Maybe it’s because I’m Canadian. Maybe it’s because I’ve never been to Mexico. Whatever the reason, I had never seen or heard of Mexican sugar skulls. That is, until a couple of weeks ago when I was surfing for kid’s halloween costumes on Kijiji  and came across this listing for Mexican sugar skulls. How enchanting! These would make fabulous favors for a Halloween wedding!

Mexican sugar skulls or calaveras de azúcar are used to adorn altars on The Day of the Dead.

Then I found this tutorial on how to make sugar skulls. And this one too. And this one.

I will definitely be making these for halloween next  year!

Sea Glass Rocks!: The North American Sea Glass Festival

October 21st, 2009 Christina Posted in Unique Wedding Finds, Wedding Trends 3 Comments »

I’ve never physically met anyone else who collects sea glass (other than my two kids and my husband and a few brief encounters with strangers on the beach.) Sure, I’ve connected online with dozens of other sea glass collectors, but I’ve yet to have a face to face conversation with another sea glass collector. In fact, many people in these parts barely know what sea glass is.

Them: “What are your plans this weekend?”

Me: “I’m going to the North American Sea Glass Festival in Erie, PA.”

Them: “Sea glass?”

Me: “Ya, sea glass. You know. Glass you find on a beach.”

Them: “Oh. Okay. Ya. Glass you find on a beach.”

Me: “But it’s not sharp. It’s been smoothed by the sand and waves and the good stuff is decades old.”

Them: Blank look. Eyes slightly glazed over.

Usually the conversation ends there or changes to another topic.

But things were a bit different this weekend: I was in the company of thousands of sea glass collectors at the North American Sea Glass Festival in Erie, PA.

As one sea glasser put it: “It looks like sea glass is the new buzz word.”

Four years ago, the first North American Sea Glass Festival attracted 1,000 people. This year 6,000 + came through the doors. I think this is only the beginning of the sea glass phenomenon.

An entire industry of jewelers and artisans has blossomed around the sea glass movement. And consumers are loving it. I couldn’t even get near many of the sea glass jewelry booths at the festival because of the crowds.

My passion for sea glass grows stronger each day. What does this have to do with weddings?

Sea glass makes some damn fine jewelry. Stay tuned for posts featuring some of the fabulous artisans who are using sea glass to create affordable and one of a kind wedding jewelry.

(I shot the video above at the North American Sea Glass Festival. Okay, so it’s not award winning footage, but it will give you an idea on how very crazy-busy it was!)

Artists I Heart in Very Big Way

October 15th, 2009 Christina Posted in Unique Wedding Finds, Wedding Planning No Comments »

I have a favourite artist on Etsy. His name is Philip Kirk. I’ve bought several of his originals including this one:

philip kirk

Philip combines a super-charged imagination with stellar technical skills. His originals are way underpriced.

Then there is Helene Lacelle - a fellow Ontarian, and my favourite eBay artist. I love her whimsical style. I can’t wait to get my hands on one of her originals – which I might add are also way underpriced.

Through their art, both Helene and Philip really speak to the child in me. When I look at their work my heart feels childlike joy.

What does this have to do with weddings?

You might have a favorite artist but never thought to approach him or her about creating your wedding stationery. S/he might not market herself/himself as someone who creates wedding stationery, but given the chance, s/he might be thrilled to tackle a new and exciting project. And think of the one-of-a kind results!

Original art also makes a pretty sweet wedding gift!

Do you have any favorite artists who sell online? If so, please comment!

Handmade Paper Made from Fruits and Vegetables

August 28th, 2009 Christina Posted in DIY Wedding, Unique Wedding Finds 1 Comment »

Blood orange paper

cucumber paper

pear paper

I dabble in collage, so when I saw this paper from Germany that is made from fruits and vegetables I thought it would be a perfect addition to my ever-growing stash of collage papers. It isn’t cheap, but it would be fun to somehow incorporate into a DIY wedding project. What about using it for illuminated table numbers or luminaries lining the aisle at an outdoor wedding?

Seems that Lego junkies are getting more and more creative these days finding ways to incoporate Legos into their wedding receptions. Lego favors, caketoppers, save-the-dates, invitations, rings, cufflinks – even place cards. I’m loving the Lego candy!

Mason Jar Drink Dispensers: DIY Drinks

July 8th, 2009 Christina Posted in DIY Wedding, Outdoor Weddings, Unique Wedding Finds, Wedding Reception 4 Comments »

mason jar drinks for wedding

I want several of these jars (found at Adam and Eve Wedding Consultants), but I have no excuse to buy them. I have no wedding to plan. But there are summer barbecues. Hmm.

mason jar drinks wedding

Just look at the fabulous homemade drinks from this Montana wedding! The dispensers were used for Arnold Palmer (half iced tea/half lemonade) blackberry vodka, lime gin, and limoncello infusions. I’d say these are on par with the watermelon keg I blogged about recently. A word of caution: The bride pointed out that a couple guests got quite inebriated from some these homemade drinks – namely the blackberry vodka. Apparently, they were drinking it straight up from mason jars and didn’t realize the power of vodka.

I think these would also be great for sangria and a varity of non-alcoholic drinks.

I found them online at Victorian Trading Company for $24.95.

Brownie Pops: Yummy DIY Treats

July 7th, 2009 Christina Posted in DIY Wedding, Unique Wedding Finds 10 Comments »

browniepopsgoodonesprg

One thing you don’t mess with is a good thing. A good thing like my mother-in-law’s DEEElicious brownies. You just don’t mess with them. Unless, of course, you just bought a Wilton brownie pop mold.

I’ve been seeing brownie pops here and there on various food blogs and I couldn’t wait to give em’ a go, so I drove 20 minutes to the nearest Micheal’s and yippeee, I got the last mold in stock.

“These things are selling like crazy,” said the cashier, as she scanned my 50 percent off coupon.

On the way home I loaded up on various coloured sugars and meltable chocolate wafers to decorate my creations.

brownie pop molds decoration

I set up my decorating station, and off I went to whip up a batch of brownies. Thankfully, the Flintstones had a particularly compelling episode that afternoon which enraptured my children for a full half an hour (miraculous!). This meant that my husband could pitch in and help with the brownie pop making.

Unfortunately, impatience + baking = trouble and I am not a patient person. I try, but when I get really jazzed about something, I want IT NOW. So, in my haste to decorate my brownie pops, I did not let them cool long enough and the brownie pop stick kept sliding through the end of the brownie. So, keep this in mind if you decide these are something you want to make. Also, I think it would help keep the stick in place if you dipped them in melted chocolate before inserting them into the brownie. Next time, that’s what I will do.

None of my brownie pops looked ‘perfect’ and if perfection is your thing, you might want to get a local baker to make these for you or at least decorate them for you especially if you are making them for your wedding. That said, my imperfect brownie pops were fun and super yummy to eat and I will make them again soon.

I think these would make a superbly fun snack for a wedding shower.

Here is the brownie recipe. If you don’t have brownie pop molds, you can make them in a pan and use cookie cutters to cut out shapes and insert a cookie stick. Read the tutorial on how to make cookie cutter brownies over at Twig and Thistle.

Barb’s  Brownies

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

1/2 cup butter (I use salted butter.)

2 scant cups brown sugar

2 eggs

1 cup flour

5 dessert spoons cocoa

1 tsp vanilla

Cream butter and add sugar. Cream well. Add eggs and beat until fluffy. Add salt and vanilla. Mix in flour and cocoa.

How to Make Brownie Pops

brownie1

Spray silicone brownie mold with vegetable oil. (You can get the molds from my Amazon affiliate link here if you want: Wilton Round Brownie Pop Mold.) Fill each mold cavity 2/3 full with brownie batter. Place mold in oven and bake at 350 degrees for 30 mins. (Time will vary depending on your oven and the type of pan you are using.) According to Wilton.com, you can also bake for 15 to 20 minutes, remove from oven, carefully insert cookie sticks, then return to oven for the remaining cooking time. Maybe this would help the cookie sticks to set?

brownie pops

Place pan on cooling grid and cool completely. Pop brownies from mold. I turned my mold over and carefully pushed in the bottom of each cavity. They released easily.

brownie pops

Gently insert cookie sticks.

brownie pops

Melt chocolate wafers. (I nuked mine). Gently dip brownie pops in melted chocolate. (When the chocolate eventually hardens it will help to seal the end of the brownies.)

brownie pops

Gently dip brownie pop in sprinkles or colored sugar. Let cool. I had to let my brownie pops cool with the brownie part facing down. I tried to turn them over to cool but the stick went through the end. I suspect this would not have happened if I had let the brownie pops cool down more before inserting the cookie stick and dipping them in the chocolate.

Enjoy!!

If you are making brownie pops for your wedding or bridal shower you can place them in mason jars and simply have your guests help themselves. (They would also make cute favors.) One thing is certain: They will go fast!!

I’d love to hear about your attempts at making these. Please drop me a line if you do!!
