How to Make a Terrarium for Your Wedding

Posted on November 23, 2011 by Christina

terrariumWant to learn how to make a terrarium for your wedding?

DIY terrariums are such a fun and inexpensive way to decorate at your wedding reception. There are many different types of terrariums. Some use fresh moss and succulents, while others use dried moss and other botanicals. I went with the dried, no-fuss option for this tutorial.

    What you will need:

    • Clear glass bowl or vase (I got mine at a second hand store for a buck)
    • dried moss
    • stones, sticks and other botanicals
    • model train figures
    • glue
    • scissors

    How to Make a Terrarium

Using scissors, cut a piece of moss to fit the bottom of the glass container. Place the moss inside the container. I did not glue the moss to the container.

Place your chosen natural elements (rocks, twigs, botanicals) inside the terrarium. If you want, you can glue them down.

Grab your little man (or woman) and glue him to a rock. Place the rock inside the terrarium. That’s it. You are done!! Make several of them as centerpieces for a fraction of the cost of flowers.

Wedding Decor Trend: The Bell Jar

Posted on November 17, 2011 by Christina

Originally used in laboratories, bell jars were used to create a vacuum. Now, they’re used to create stylish centerpieces and focal points in wedding decor. Bell jars, or cloches, were also used to protect young plants. When incorporated into decorating they help highlight whatever items they’re covering.

I love the look of cakes or desserts under bell jars. Even a small and simple cake can look grand and special when under a bell jar.

Smaller bell jars can be used for place cards or to further decorate each plate. This would be a great idea to use just for the head table too.

Incorporating bell jars into your centerpieces is a great way to make simpler floral arrangements look more unique and special. Bell jars help their contents to look like something specialized and to be further studied, like these ferns and floral arrangements.

Buffet tables are a great area to use bell jars; it varies the heights of the items and makes the table look even more pulled together and as though the items were from a specialty shop.

Both vintage and new bell jars share the same look so they can be found in lots of different places. Home good stores often carry them for displaying items, thrift stores may have some vintage ones and etsy and ebay are always good places to look online. The look of bell jars add a sophistication by showcasing whatever items they’re encasing, making that item even more unique.

DIY Wedding Ideas: Fortune Cookies with a Customized Message

Posted on November 16, 2011 by Christina

    custom fortune cookies

Looking for no fuss, no muss DIY wedding ideas for your reception? What about no-bake customized fortune cookies?

I love the idea of homemade fortune cookies as wedding favors. So I made some. Although they looked okay, my DIY fortune cookies were a disaster. I gave up on the idea – that is, until Rena from The Cheese Thief sent over this ingenious tutorial.

See, Rena’s cookies don’t require any baking skills whatsoever. The cookies are already baked. All you need to do is remove the message from store bought cookies, add your own custom message – and dip in melted chocolate. Here’s how:

Custom Fortune Cookie Tutorial from The Cheese Thief

    You will need:

    • Store bought fortune cookies
    • Printer and paper for creating messages
    • paper towel
    • microwave
    • chocolate for melting (optional)
    • gum paste(optional)

First print out custom fortunes using any text editor.  Rena used the font Calibri in size 8. Wet a paper towel and ring slightly.  You want the paper towel to be damp but not dripping wet. Wrap towel around fortune cookie and microwave for 20 seconds.

Unwrap fortune cookie from towel carefully, towel may be hot.

The fortune cookie should now be pliable enough to open. Quickly removed existing fortune cookie message and replace with your custom printed one.

Reshape fortune cookie (should be fairly simple, as the cookie already has its form) and hold for 10 seconds to keep form. You want to do the last two steps quick, the fortune cookie cools very quickly.

    custom fortune cookie

Voila! A customized fortune cookie! And your kitchen is still clean!

If you want to get fancy, you can dip them in melted chocolate (here is an excellent tutorial on how to melt chocolate) and add DIY gum paste flowers.
