Paper Flowers Tutorial: Egg Carton Daffodils

Posted on April 12, 2011 by Christina

    paper-daffodils-diy

Love daffodils? Follow this step by step paper flowers tutorial and make your own sunny daffodils out of egg cartons.

I made my first bouquet of egg carton flowers a while back and I loved how they turned out. Why not try the same technique to make daffodils? I gave it a whirl a few days ago and was really pleased with the results.

This is a fairly easy DIY project, but it is time consuming – especially if you are making dozens of flowers for your wedding. I’d definitely enlist some help from your friends and family if you are going to take on the task of decorating all of your tables with bouquets of paper daffodils.

Paper Flowers Tutorial: Egg Carton Daffodils

    You will need:

    • Paper Egg Cartons
    • Pipe cleaners
    • Floral Tape
    • Yellow Crepe Paper
    • Scissors (the ones with curved blades work the best)
    • Yellow Acrylic Paint
    • Paper Gift Bag

Gather your egg cartons. I used two different varieties of egg cartons to get the shapes that I needed. Remove the shapes from the cartons. Cut the petal shapes out of egg cup. I divided the egg cup into six equal sections and penciled in the sections to make sure the petals were all the same size before I cut them out. For the corona (the cup shape in the centre of the flower), I used a triangular shape from the egg carton. I cut small “v” shapes around the edges, as you can see in the photo.

    Let’s Help the Broke-Ass Bride

Posted on April 11, 2011 by Christina

    brokeass-bride-wedding

Wedding blogger extraordinaire Dana LaRue, aka Broke-Ass Bride, needs a little help right now. And you can make a difference.

Dana has chronic autoimmune diseases that require frequent surgery (she’s had 11 operations in the past 9 years) and regular ongoing medical care. When she was 19 she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Uveitis which causes her immune system to doggedly attack her eyes, resulting in inflammation, visual disturbances and blurriness. It is incurable and will cause blindness if left untreated.  She also has a very rare deep-tissue form of a disease called Granuloma Annulare, causing a different type of inflammation in her foot.

The medical expenses to deal with these diseases are the primary reason she and her hubby are “broke-ass”,  she says.

She recently learned that she needs surgery in her left eye, costing $18,000.

To help raise money for her medical expenses, she is holding an online fundraiser called Dishing for Dana: bad-ass bloggers cooking comforts for a cause.

Dana is in the process of compiling comfort food recipes and stories from “the most bad ass bloggers and beyond”. Make a monetary donation towards her medical expenses and you will receive a password to access the full recipe database. (Donate big and her rapping hubby will create a personalized rap for you or your business! See other incentives here.)

To help raise money for Dana, for the next week I will be donating 15 cents for every new “Like” I receive on the Intimate Weddings Facebook Fan page. As I write this we have 1, 111 likes – so any new likes from now until April 30, 11:59 pm Eastern will count. (We capping it at $500 US.)

So come on over to FB and Like Intimate Weddings on Facebook. (Remember – we’re giving 15 cents for each new ‘Like’)

You can also donate to the cause yourself. Even small amounts can make a difference!

    Rustic Wedding Ideas

Posted on April 7, 2011 by Christina

As a huge fan of “the details” I’m finding myself drawn more and more to the rustic ones. Little somethings here and there are like finding mini  treasures or surprises when you discover them at a wedding. I love when couples up-cycle different items from what they originally were made for into something unexpected.

I especially love the idea of wooden rain gutters (can be found at local vintage salvage yard). I recently saw them being used as flower boxes, which I think would look amazing as a sort of floral runner down the middle of a farm table! This is what I imagine they would look like being used to hold candles. Very dreamy.

Hay seating is something that seems kind of basic, but as seen here dressing it up a little bit makes a world of difference. Just adding cloth gives the hay a more put together look.

I especially love wedding details using old keys! Here are some great examples of save the dates and escort card options.

Vintage key escort cards wouldn’t be complete without chicken wire to hang them from! Chicken wire is very bendable so it works best with a frame, using an old screen door, shoji screen or old window would all be perfect because the frame is built in. Simply remove the old screen/ glass, cut the chicken wire to size and nail or staple gun it onto the back, and voila!

As mentioned earlier, vintage and architectural salvage yards are great resources for finding these items as well as antique fairs and flea markets. Happy hunting!

BC Wedding Venues: Wilderness Weddings at The Eagle’s Nest on Galiano...

Posted on April 5, 2011 by Christina

    galiano-island-wedding

British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast is dear to my heart: Darin and I honeymooned in Tofino. There is something about the wildness of the place – its ancient cedars and misty shoreline that make it divinely mysterious and mythical. It’s rugged beauty enchants, inspires, humbles. What better place to declare your  life-long commitment to the man (or woman) you adore?

The Eagle’s Nest on Galiano Island in the Canadian Gulf Islands is the perfect spot for nature lovers who want an intimate wedding surrounded by the splendors of the BC wilderness.

The very private estate includes the southern tip of Galiano Island and is an enclave in a newly created Provincial Park.   Featured in “Northwest Best Places”, Eagles Nest has gained notoriety for its exceptional location and architectural excellence.

Intimate weddings of up to 50 guests are held in a beautiful wedding marquee tent overlooking the ocean. The main house can accommodate about 35 guests for a reception “buffet” style.

Eagle’s Nest offers 3 and 7 day packages but can also arrange one or two day weddings.
