    One-of-a-Kind Handmade Weddings: A Review

Posted on November 10, 2011 by Christina

One-of-a-Kind Handmade Weddings: Easy-to-Make Projects for Stylish, Unforgettable Details by Laura Maffeo and Colleen Mullaney is a DIY wedding craft and project book.

As with any DIY craft book, the projects are meant to inspire. Projects in this book should be a jumping off point to creating something that is unique and your own.

One-of-a-Kind Handmade Weddings: Easy-to-Make Projects for Stylish, Unforgettable Details offers paper crafts from cocktail napkins to place cards. Many of their projects are paper because as they say, “paper is versatile and easy to work with and can be cost-effective too,” all things that make for the best DIY projects!  Picking out paper from a store like Paper Source would personalize and update a lot of the projects in this book as well.

The Vintage Post Card Save-The-Date project is a cute idea. Collecting the post cards along the way is half the fun! They recommend printing your information onto the card. If you find, or purchase, a fun vintage font online to match the style of the postcards it would complete the look.

I also like their Rehearsal Dinner Coaster (which I think could be used for the actual wedding as well). Buying a stack of simple paper circles for the coasters (thick card stock would look the best, but may be more expensive) saves time on having to punch or cut them out yourself.  They recommend buying a bride and groom stamp, as well as number stamps for the dates. I think making or buying a custom stamp (you can find cool ones on Etsy where they make a stamp from a photo of the two of you!) would add more of a personal touch and make the coasters a fun keepsake that people could bring home.

The Hanging Stars project is really pretty and a nice departure from the tissue poms that are everywhere right now. A bonus is that they’re made from colorful bags, so they’re a “green” craft project which is always nice. These stars are fully customizable too, from the color to the size. Another idea for these stars would be to to make them with three different colors which would make a cool pinwheel affect. Because these fold flat they make great props for a destination wedding too!

One-of-a-Kind Handmade Weddings: Easy-to-Make Projects for Stylish, Unforgettable Details has clear step by step instructions with accompanying photos as well. It’s easy to follow and to expand upon to make your own creations as well. With a variety of styles and projects this book will inspire you to create your own one-of-a-kind wedding.

    DIY Wedding Chalkboard

Posted on November 9, 2011 by Christina

    wedding chalkboard

This DIY wedding chalkboard is hugely versatile. You can write anything you want on the sign and display it at your reception. After the wedding, hang it in your kitchen as a menu board or use it to write love notes to your new hubbie:)

Want to learn how to make a wedding chalkboard?

    You will need:

    • Antique frame (I lucked out and found this 1940’s gorgeous frame for $5 at an antique store. It had a rather unexciting marine print inside, which I removed.)
    • Spray paint in desired color to paint the frame
    • chalkboard paint (I used the spray paint version)

Bring your frame outside or into a well ventilated area.

Remove glass, photo and backing from frame. If the backing is smooth and sturdy, keep it. This is what you will use to create your chalkboard.

I used brown Tremclad Hammered spray paint. I would recommend this paint for this project!

Set your frame on a cardboard box and give it a coat of spray paint. Turn it over and do the same. Let dry according to instructions on can.

I let mine dry overnight. Once it is dry, place into frame. (This flower painting is the back of the chalkboard backing.)

Write desired message on chalkboard and set out during reception. (It’s a great way to remind your guests to take a wedding favor!)

    Autumn Wedding Ideas: Acorns

Posted on November 3, 2011 by Christina

Acorns are a perfect for autumn weddings. Whether you use them in bulk as bases for your candles and flowers in vases, accents in boutonierres and bouquets or just as little pops of the season around your reception, they’re affordable (can’t beat free!) and sure to be appreciated by your guests.

Check out these unique floating acorn candles. These little candles will burn 40-90 minutes each!

Incorporating acorns into your bouquet and/ or boutonnieres is a subtle way to tie in the season while still remaining stylish.

You could even make an acorn pomander for your flower girl to carry instead of flowers and match the ribbon to the other colors you’re using.

Simple centerpieces that incorporate acorns could be branches with the acorns still attached, or a branch with acorns hanging from them like ornaments. Both looks are simple and rustic and could be used by themselves or with flowers added in as well.

Acorns also look great in bulk. If you could collect enough of them they’re beautiful as filler for flowers or candles. You could also attach several together to make a unique napkin ring.

Single acorns can also make an impact. Using an acorn to accent the menu, or to attach your place card to, are both simple and classic.

If you’re looking for a less traditional way to use acorns you could add felt or paper leaves and hang them on a line like this person did. This would be a great idea for hanging the escort cards as well.

Another pretty idea is painting the inside of the acorn caps, they used fun metallic hues, but you could use whatever colors you wanted. These would be neat sprinkled around the dessert table, or even being inside a small bowl or nest that held the wedding rings!

If you want to carry your adoration of acorns over to the food you could offer bright marzipan or other candy acorns. Or, you could make this sweet acorn chocolate DIY.

Acorns are a great accent and addition to any autumnal affair! How do you like them best: filler, al natural on the branch, accents for place cards or as a sweet treat?
